Course 701M/702M:
Kalachakra

    Description

The Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) is the last of the Buddha’s teachings on tantra. It is the conclusion of his esoteric teachings on the quick path of transformation into an enlightened being. It puts forward the view that in one lifetime a practitioner can experience the unchanging bliss of an awareness that nothing ultimately exists apart from Buddha Nature. Because knower and known are equally buddha, they are one, and there is no longer any duality. The range and scale of knowledge presented here to verify that perspective includes astronomy/astrology, alchemy, and sacred geography. Present day politics are also brought into focus in a famous prophecy concerning a religious war that will lead to a universal karmic vision and residence in the paradisiacal land called Shambhala. Our task in the first eight sessions will be to examine how these and other subjects have been, in the special connections the Kalachakra Tantra makes, established as relevant to the practice of tantric meditation.  Then, following initiation into the dzokchen version of Kalachakra by Khenchen Paljea Dorjee, we will explore for eight more sessions, following his instructions, actual individual practice.

   Requirements

Kalachakra Tantra initiation or any other anuttara yoga tantra initiation, and/or the intention to receive dzokchen Kalachakra initiation from Khenchen Paljea Dorjee.

James Rutke is a poet and a translator. In 1974, after doing his M.A. work in Sanskrit and Ph.D. work in Tibetan at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he was turned unalterably into the path of meditative practice by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and H.H. the 16th Karmapa. In 1981, he received Kalachakra teachings from H.H. the Dalai Lama and began practicing constellational astrology. Osho gave him tantric teachings and the name Swami Prem Vedarthi (One who Knows Love). In 1988, while he was living with Lama Kunga at Ewam Choden Dharma Center, he received the title Palden Lotsawa (Glorious Translator) from H.E. Chogye Trichen who gave him the assignment to teach what he translates, especially the poetry of the great 19th century impartialist Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. Drawn to Dharmakirti College by the living and loving impartialist Garchen Rinpoche, he welcomes students from all traditions.
